There are two basic properties on which radiant barriers work: Reflectivity and Emissivity.  First, the aluminum is reflective on the hot side, reflecting some of the heat back from where it came.  Second, and most importantly, aluminum has a low emissivity of around 0.03.  This means that only 3% of the heat is emitted to the air on the cold side.  In order to benefit from both of these properties, the radiant barrier must be double sided and installed so that there is an air space or low density material (like insulation) on both sides.  However, even if your installation only allows for an airspace on one side of the material, gathering radiant barrier information and installing will be extremely effective in both summer and winter.

  • 1,000 SQUARE FEET ROLL (28 pounds): 250 linear feet BREATHABLE (perforated) DOUBLE-SIDED pure aluminum foil radiant barrier insulation; reflects 97% radiant heat
  • USED IN RETROFIT & NEW CONSTRUCTION: Best radiant barrier to reduce residential attic temperatures up to 40 degrees; lowers utility bills year round. Thermal insulation used in attic space, garage, garage doors, house-wrap, workshop, shed, storage unit, commercial metal building, pole barn, as pallet wrap, and more.
  • INDUSTRIALIZED COMMERCIAL GRADE: Is TEAR & PUNCTURE PROOF yet cuts easily with utility scissors or hack saw. Reflects 97% of the radiant heat
  • EASY TO MAINTAIN: Non-toxic; non-carcinogenic; fiber free; easy to install; not affected by humidity; maintenance free; does not promote the growth of fungi or bacteria; does not support nesting by rodents or insects. MUST be stored in a clean dry environment prior to installation.
  • FIRE RATING: Class A / Class 1 (ASTM E-84) – Meets fire and smoke requirements for most local, state and federal building codes

Typical Uses:

  • Under Roof Decking
  • Stapled to Roof joists
  • Cathedral Ceilings
  • Attics
  • Walls
  • House Wrap
  • Floors and Crawl Spaces
  • Metal Buildings

Definition of Emissivity – The emissivity of the surface of a material is its effectiveness in emitting energy as thermal radiation. Thermal radiation is electromagnetic radiation and it may include both visible radiation (light) and infrared radiation, which is not visible to human eyes.
